On the 16th of May 1916, the Sykes-Picot Agreement is secretly signed between Great Britain and France with the assent of the Russian Empire, to designate spheres of influence and direct control after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Taking into account the presence of places sacred to the three monotheistic religions, Palestine is to be under “international administration.”
