Expansion of the Municipal Borders of East Jerusalem
On the 28th of June 1967, the Israeli Minister of Interior orders
the expansion of the municipal borders of East Jerusalem encompassing 70 square kilometers, ten times the original area. The expanded East Jerusalem is placed under Israeli law in accordance with a legislative mechanism adopted the day before by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset).
Yasser Arafat in Palestine
On the 28th of June 1967, Yasser Arafat secretly returns to the West Bank to oversee the organizational and military activities of the Fatah Movement.
Ten-Point Program
At its 12th session in Cairo from the 1st through the 8th of June 1974, the Palestinian National Council adopts a new political program, known as the “Ten-Point Program,” calling for the establishment of a national authority over any part of Palestinian territory that is liberated. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) rejects the new plan, breaking away to form a “Rejection Front” that receives the support of Iraq and Libya.
The Israeli Invasion of Lebanon
On the 4th of June 1982, Israel launches a bombing campaign by air and sea against Lebanon, followed the next day by a full-scale land invasion. The Israeli Army occupies the south of Lebanon, causing vast destruction and thousands of casualties; 15,000 persons are killed, half under the age of 13. On the 13th of June, the Israeli Army encircles Beirut and the city is besieged. Israeli Navy ships, Artillery and Air Force bombard West Beirut including residential areas and refugee camps. The Palestinian resistance and National Lebanese Movement confront the aggression and prevent Israeli soldiers from entering the city for 78 days.
