Israel violation of united nations resolutions related to Jerusalem
In violation of United Nations resolutions and its own official commitments, The Israeli Prime Minister declares Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on the 5th of December 1949. On the 23rd of January 1950, Israel effectively moves its Parliament (Knesset) and government offices to the western part of Jerusalem, occupied by Israeli forces in 1948.
Establishing the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
On the 11th of December 1967, George Habash and a number of leaders of the Arab Nationalist Movement (Al-Qawmeen Al-Arab) establish the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Yasser Arafat addresses the United Nations General Assembly in Geneva
After the United States refuses to grant Yasser Arafat an entry visa, the United Nations General Assembly moves its session from New York to Geneva to deliberate on “the Question of Palestine” on the 13th of December 1988.
On the 15th of December 1988, the United Nations General Assembly adopts resolution 43/176, affirming the need to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict, the core of which is the “Question of Palestine” and specifies the principles for the achievement of comprehensive peace. The resolution is adopted by 138 votes in favor, including western European countries for the first time. The United Nations General Assembly also adopts resolution 43/177, which acknowledges the proclamation of the State of Palestine by the Palestinian National Council and decides that the designation of “Palestine” should be used in place of the designation “Palestine Liberation Organization” in the United Nations system.
The Seige of Yasser Arafat
On the 8th of December 2001, the Israeli government declares that Yasser Arafat’s movements are subject to its discretion and, on the 13th of December 2001, Israeli tanks and military vehicles surround Arafat’s presidential headquarters in Ramallah. Israel cuts all ties with Arafat and Ariel Sharon prevents him from leaving his headquarters to participate in the Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem on the 24th of December 2001. The multipronged siege on Yasser Arafat, the elected president of the Palestinian people, continues for 34 months.
